I picked up my handbag.
“Then we’re going home.”
When we arrived, the garage door was open.
Several cardboard boxes sat beside Dereck’s own workbench.
On top of one box lay Dad’s old canvas tool apron.
Beside it was a wooden-handled hand plane.
I recognized it instantly.
One corner of the handle was chipped.
When I was twelve, I’d accidentally dropped that tool onto the concrete floor.
I’d been terrified Dad would be angry.
Instead, he’d sat beside me and patiently repaired the damaged wood.
“Las herramientas se dañan, cariño”, me había dicho. “Eso no significa que hayan terminado”.
I picked up the plane.
The repaired corner was still smooth beneath my thumb.
Mom came closer.
“Oh, Sheila. I remember that day.”
I nodded, unable to speak.
Dereck stood in the doorway.
“See? I didn’t throw anything away.”
I looked at him.
