El esposo de una mujer dijo que había olvidado su pasaporte en casa, así que envió a su madre a buscarlo mientras estaban en el aeropuerto, minutos después, su madre llamó y susurró: “¡Cariño, te tendió una trampa! ¡Vuelve A Casa Ahora!”

Dereck approached and reached for my hand.

“Everything okay? Did she find my passport?”

I forced myself to remain calm.

“She’s still looking.”

Mom continued speaking quietly.

“I’m sending you a photograph. Don’t let him see it yet.”

My phone vibrated.

I opened the message.

The photograph showed Dereck’s passport resting inside his bedside drawer.

Beside it was a printed receipt.

Across the top, in large letters, were three words.

PAID IN FULL.

Underneath was a scheduled collection date.

FRIDAY — 11:00 A.M.

The receipt listed woodworking equipment, cabinets, power tools, and several large workbenches.

Then I noticed the storage unit number.

B-17.

My hands went cold.

I knew that number.

It belonged to the storage unit I’d rented after my father passed away three years earlier.

Inside were the tools and equipment from his beloved woodworking shop.

My father had been a carpenter for most of his life. He repaired furniture, built cabinets, and helped neighbors fix things they couldn’t afford to replace.
