Le dije a mi suegra que tenía un vuelo temprano y me fui a la cama. A medianoche, oí abrir mi puerta. Ella pasó por mi maleta, metió algo en el bolsillo interior y luego susurró: “Está en su equipaje de mano. Incline la seguridad del aeropuerto a las seis”.

Ramirez raised his eyes.

“They’re trying to make you desperate enough to sign.”

“Esa es mi conclusión”.

Él asintió.

“Then let’s make sure their attempt gets documented properly.”

By 4:30 a.m., the officers had departed with the firearm and evidence. I’d given my official statement and saved recording copies.

I dressed in a cream pantsuit, prepared another bag, and got ready to leave.

At 5:15, Daniel appeared in the kitchen, unusually cheerful.

“Big day, sweetheart?”

“Very big.”

He poured coffee.

“Still planning to fight me over the company?”

I met his gaze.

“Are you worried?”

He laughed quietly.

“I’m worried you’ll embarrass yourself.”

Margaret llegó con perlas y mostrando una preocupación exagerada.

“Evelyn, darling, are you certain you packed everything?”

“Everything I need.”

She quickly exchanged looks with Daniel before smiling.

“I hope your trip is unforgettable.”

“Oh, Margaret,” I replied softly. “I’m certain it will be.”
