“That’s impossible!”
I looked at him calmly.
“The deed is recorded at the courthouse.”
His expression hardened.
“Mother would never have done that knowingly!”
Bertram stepped forward.
“We’ll challenge it!”
Then a familiar voice came from behind them.
“She knew exactly what she was doing.”
We all turned.
Carlton was walking down the gravel lane.
He approached the porch and stopped beside his brothers.
“I was there,” he said. “I witnessed the signing.”
Thurston stared at him.
“You knew?”
Carlton nodded.
“Since April.”
“And you let me negotiate a development contract?”
“I told you not to make commitments before the estate was settled.”
Thurston looked away.
Carlton continued.
“Mother worked with her own attorney. She understood the documents and made the decision herself.”
He explained that Henrietta had recorded a video discussing her reasons for transferring the property.
Her attorney had also arranged an evaluation of her decision-making capacity.
