I believed he’d accepted my decision.
Ahora, de pie en el aeropuerto, miré el recibo en mi teléfono.
En la parte inferior estaba el nombre de mi marido.
And in the corner of Mom’s photograph sat something I recognized immediately.
Dad’s old brass measuring tape.
The same one he’d carried in his shirt pocket for decades.
I turned toward Dereck.
“Why is my father’s measuring tape in your drawer?”
His expression changed.
“What measuring tape?”
“Mom found your passport. She also found a receipt.”
Dereck stared at me.
“What receipt?”
I held up my phone.
“Did you sell Dad’s woodworking equipment?”
He glanced nervously toward the other travelers.
“Sheila, it’s complicated.”
My chest tightened.
“Did you sell it?”
He lowered his voice.
“I was going to explain everything after our vacation.”
“After our vacation?”
“Please, babe. People are looking.”
I stepped away from him.
