Our attorney presented the recorded documents, witness testimony, and the video Henrietta had prepared.
I watched the screen.
There she was.
Sitting in her favorite chair beside the fireplace.
Her reading glasses on.
A cup of coffee in her hand.
She looked directly into the camera.
“I want to return thirty-eight acres of land to Elnora Ruthanne Whitsett.”
Her voice was steady.
“Esa propiedad una vez perteneció a su bisabuelo. Trabajó para comprarlo, y la familia de mi esposo lo adquirió en circunstancias que creo que eran profundamente injustos”.
She paused.
“Her mother spent forty-three years serving this family. Elnora spent another twenty-six.”
Then she said something that made me cover my mouth.
“I didn’t ask Elnora whether she wanted the land because I knew she would never ask me for it.”
She smiled faintly.
“I wanted to make sure it went back where it belonged.”
The courtroom was silent.
